How I Overcame Fear After It Took Over My Life.

Updated: Jan 17, 2020

Lets me tell you what fear does to you. Fear steals your joy, your hope and your love for all things beauty in life. To the point where you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Fear creates anxiety and anxiety causes you to alienate yourself. In your darkest hour, you spend your time trying to understand and pushing away all the thoughts in your head. But all your efforts fall on deaf ears and just make things worse.

You go to bed anxious and afraid, You wake up anxious and afraid, You spend the day been anxious and afraid, Then you go home and repeat the same cycle again.

This state of mind becomes your new normal. Every day, week, month and year, you make the same choices which lead to the same outcome. Until one day, you wake up and issue an executive order to change the current state of your mind.

In issuing that executive order you break the cycle of negativity and made a different choice from the one that you made the day before. On the day, l chose to break this vicious cycle, l learned something. Fear only has control over you, when you give it the authority and power to do so.

By saying “enough”, you start a journey of self-recovery. On your journey, you discover what the root of your fear is and chose to take back control, by draining the monster that you created of its energy.

In that moment your fear becomes powerless and starts trying to get a reaction out of you. By using the past or creating worst-case scenarios that will never happen. So it (fear) can regain control of you.

In draining the beast of its power, you restored your authority over yourself. But realise in doing that you are not getting rid of fear but merely reducing it. That emotion you call fear is not going anywhere anytime soon but in actual fact, it will always going to be present. It's how you manage and react to that feeling of fear. If you choose to acknowledge the fear is there and let it go then you have dominion over that emotion. However, choose to push it away or try to understand it then by doing that your giving fear power over you.

Fear and anxiety inspired me to write my poem "The fear in my heart". I wrote this poem because l believe everyone experiences fear and anxiety at some point in their life. However, when people experience these emotions they often feel like they are the only person in the world experiencingthese emotions. So, l just wanted to remind people that they are not alone.
